The Nigerian Army has acquired two new helicopters to strengthen its counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations across various conflict zones in the country. The helicopters were received yesterday at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja emphasized that the new aircraft would enhance the army’s ability to serve the nation. He hoped these helicopters would help troops overcome terrorists and other criminal elements, ensuring peace and economic prosperity for Nigeria.
“The aircraft will provide the necessary flexibility on the battlefield. We are on a learning curve in aviation, and we hope this will be a positive experience that enhances our operational success,” Lagbaja stated.
He highlighted the army’s long-standing ambition to establish an aviation wing since 1984 and expressed delight that this dream was finally realized with the acquisition of these helicopters. Aviation has always been a game changer, and this acquisition will significantly improve our operational efficiency,” he added.
Lagbaja noted that the helicopters are ready for immediate deployment for logistics, surveillance, and other critical tasks. “If we have a mission tomorrow, these helicopters are ready to be tasked accordingly,” he said.
Brigadier-General M.S Alkali, Coordinator of Nigerian Army Aviation, affirmed that the new helicopters will enhance the army’s reconnaissance, surveillance, and air mobility capabilities. “The acquisition of these air platforms demonstrates our commitment to improving our capabilities in the face of evolving security challenges,” Alkali stated.
He also emphasized the importance of skilled personnel operating and maintaining these machines. “Their professionalism, dedication, and expertise are the foundation of our success,” he said.
With these new helicopters, the Nigerian Army aims to improve operational flexibility and efficiency, ensure better support for troops in the field, and contribute to the overall security and stability of the nation.
