- INEC warned against discrimination towards opposition parties in the upcoming Edo and Ondo governorship elections, urging fair campaigning practices
- INEC emphasized that using state resources to favour any party is prohibited, stressing equal media coverage for all candidates
As the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states approach September 21 and November 16, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned sternly against discrimination towards opposition parties.
On Friday, Mr. Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC, highlighted this concern. He advised incumbent governors and the media to avoid biased campaigning.
Olumekun’s warning follows the publication of the final list of candidates and the start of public campaigns for the elections. He noted that discriminatory practices often lead to violent clashes among party supporters, disrupting public peace.
He emphasized, “Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act 2022 prohibits using state resources to favour or disadvantage any political party or candidate during elections.”
Additionally, he pointed out that Sections 95(3-5) mandate equal coverage and visibility for all parties and candidates by public media houses. Violations can lead to sanctions against media heads and their officials, as outlined in Section 95(6).
Olumekun mentioned that INEC has published guidelines for conducting political rallies, processions, and campaigns on its website and social media platforms. He urged all stakeholders to familiarize themselves with these provisions and adhere strictly to the guidelines.
This call for compliance aims to ensure a fair and peaceful election process in both states.
