The Kogi State Government is teaming up with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other stakeholders to address the scourge of drug abuse and trafficking within the state.
Umar Mustapha Yahuza, the state’s NDLEA Chairman, emphasized the seriousness of the rising drug abuse incidents during a stakeholders’ meeting in Okene. The meeting was part of activities leading to this year’s World Drug Day on June 26.
Yahuza highlighted that drug abuse has devastating effects, contributing to increased incidents of kidnapping, robbery, and rape. He stressed the need to curtail this menace, stating, “Combatting drug abuse is crucial for improving citizens’ lives. It erodes moral behaviour, leading individuals to engage in unlawful activities.”
He further noted that drug abuse has torn apart many families, particularly affecting youths and disrupting their lives, making them a burden on society.
The NDLEA chairman assured that the agency would intensify efforts to arrest and prosecute illicit drug dealers and abusers to stem the tide.
Eunice Achimugwu, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Drug Abuse, urged parents to monitor the moral conduct of their children and educate them about the dangers of drug abuse.
In support of these efforts, Monday Anyebe, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, affirmed the state government’s commitment to collaborating with relevant agencies to combat drug abuse and trafficking effectively.
