- Shehu Sani described Northern politicians’ meeting with Buhari as a failed strategy to unseat President Tinubu in 2027
- Sani warned that stirring Arewa sentiments for political gain could cause chaos and disrupt Nigeria’s fragile unity
Shehu Sani, a civil rights activist and social critic, has described the recent meeting of Northern politicians with former President Muhammadu Buhari as a strategic move to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Prominent figures such as Atiku and El-Rufai, who are at odds with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna and at the federal level, were involved in the meeting.
Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th National Assembly, interpreted the gathering as an effort to regroup Northern political forces ahead of the next general election. He predicted that this strategy would ultimately fail.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Sani criticized the attempt to revive Buhari’s political influence and mobilize support, warning against stirring Arewa sentiments without considering the potential chaos it could cause.
“The recent visits by some prominent Northern politicians to Daura appear to be the usual Eid homage, but looking deeper, it’s a surreptitious attempt to build a strong Northern alliance using ex-President Buhari as a rallying point to challenge and unseat President Tinubu’s government in 2027,” Sani wrote.
He emphasized that this regrouping of Northern political forces would likely fail, accusing the politicians of resurrecting Buhari’s political charm and fanaticism to mislead the public once again. He warned that such actions could ignite dangerous regional sentiments.
“The same Buhari who led Nigeria for eight years left the North worse than he found it. Poverty and insecurity peaked during his tenure. What do they want to achieve with power again?” Sani questioned. He criticized the Northern elite for their obsession with power and cautioned that their actions could disrupt the democratic process and the country’s fragile unity.
Sani noted that the South did not challenge Buhari during his eight-year tenure, urging Northern politicians to avoid igniting regional tensions. He condemned their attempts to whip up Northern sentiments for political gain, calling it a dangerous political experiment.
“Buhari’s reign ensured the dominance of Northerners in strategic positions for eight years. They enriched themselves while impoverishing the country. The current plot to unseat Tinubu will fail,” Sani stated.
He urged people in the North to reject these politicians and their schemes, highlighting their failures in various projects and their inability to improve regional security. Sani called for rejecting their antics, emphasizing that they have nothing substantial to offer.
