  • The Federal Government has armed aviation security personnel to combat increasing vandalism and theft at Nigerian airports
  • Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku commissioned 120 trained officers, deploying them to major airports in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu

After years of consideration, the federal government finally equipped aviation security personnel with arms to enhance security at Nigerian airports. This move aims to address the increasing incidents of vandalism and theft, particularly at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, commissioned 120 Aviation Security (AVSEC) Special Force officers trained to bear arms. The commissioning occurred at the international wing of Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, with additional deployments planned for major airports in Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu.

Mrs. Kuku stated, “This is to help us secure our assets, lives, and people within the aviation environment, specifically at the airports. We have invested significant time in training and selecting the individuals for this squad. They are professional and will continue to work closely with other security agencies.”

Addressing concerns about excessive force, Mrs. Kuku assured the security team that they would use their arms responsibly. She advised passengers to conduct their activities in an orderly manner and emphasized that armed security is intended to deter illegal activities rather than unnecessarily employ force.

The initial deployment will cover five international airports: Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Enugu. Mrs. Kuku highlighted that this is a recurring training program, with about 30 officers already deployed in Lagos. The special squad will collaborate with other security agencies to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Mrs. Kuku also mentioned ongoing collaborations with other security agencies. “We are working closely with the leaders of all relevant security forces. I recently met with the Chief of Air Staff in Abuja, and we are coordinating efforts closely.”

Regarding plans, Mrs. Kuku stated, “The next phase involves better coordination. We have started campaigns against corruption at our airports. The special squad is here to deter illegal activities and ensure the security of our aviation facilities.”

This development marks a significant milestone in enhancing airport security in Nigeria, aiming to create a safer environment for passengers and airport staff.
