JUST-IN: Protesters block airport gate in Rivers state over lack of basic amenities

The development comes as the Rivers State Police Command, on Monday, warned against planned protests by the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, (NULGE).

A group of women from Ipo community have barricaded the entrance to the Port Harcourt airport in Rivers state, to protest lack of basic amenities in their area.

Ipo is a host community to the Port harcourt international airport in the Ikwerre LGA in Rivers.

This demonstration by the Ipo community women comes on the heels of the Rivers police command’s directing the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) to shelve their planned protest.

It was gathered that the women’s demonstration is aimed to bring attention government, adding that they lacked basic amenities including supply of electricity, good roads, and poor schools, despite hosting a critical federal government facility.

The community women were said to have blocked the gate at the airport roundabout, carrying placards, singing and even cooking at the gate on Tuesday.

The women who sang also displayed several placards to drive home their demands such as ‘‘We Demand Our Citizens Rights’, ‘Ipo Women Peaceful Protest’, among others.

The protesters’ action has resulted in a snarl of traffic on the roads leading to the airport.

The protest was also said to have disrupted flights as some travellers could not access the airport.

In March, the women staged a similar protest, which was eventually calmed by Sergeant Awuse, former chairman of the rivers traditional rulers council.
