Jonathan: Nigeria Will Overcome Economic Uncertainty Through Collaboration

Socio-Economic Uncertainty of Legal Practices in Nigeria

Goodluck Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan expressed optimism that Nigeria will overcome the current socio-economic challenges with God’s help and collaborative efforts. He emphasized the need for unity in addressing the nation’s economic hardships.

Speaking at the “2024 Annual Law Week” of the Yenagoa Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) held at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall in Yenagoa, Jonathan highlighted the significance of the event’s theme, “The Legal Profession in a Time of Socio-Economic Uncertainty.” He noted that this theme is timely and provides a chance to reflect on governance issues and the urgent need for solutions to benefit citizens.

Represented by HRM Collins Daniel, the Paramount Ruler of the Abureni Clan, Jonathan recalled past economic challenges. He mentioned the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) introduced during General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida’s administration from 1984 to 1987, which led to severe hardship but eventually saw the country recover. He also cited the global economic recession from 2016 to 2019, during which Nigeria faced significant hardships but managed to emerge from the recession within a few years.

Jonathan stated, “God’s grace will also overcome the socio-economic uncertainty affecting all corners of society. The federal government is doing its best to address the situation, but collaborative efforts are crucial to finding solutions.”

Justice Obande Ogbuinya, Justice of the Supreme Court (JSC), delivered the keynote speech titled “Socio-Economic Uncertainty of Legal Practices in Nigeria: The Law in the Global Economy.” He emphasized that the economy is the foundation of every society and that law reflects the nature of the economy. He acknowledged the ongoing global economic crisis and its impact worldwide.

The event underscored the importance of unity and collaboration in overcoming economic challenges and highlighted the critical role of the legal profession in navigating these uncertain times.
