Assailants gun down aged couple, one other in Benue

Gunmen terrorising Nigeria’s middle belt State of Benue have struck again killing at least three.

The deceased were killed when the gunmen attacked Ikpele community in Agatu Local Government Area of the State.

Among those killed during the attack, which happened over the weekend, were elderly couple.

A local, who spoke in confidence with newsmen, stated that several people were injured during the invasion.

According to the resident, the identity of the attackers remains unknown, adding that the onslaught might have been spurred by warring communities.

“It’s becoming difficult to identify the killers. Sometimes, the attack could be propelled by the communities involved in land or chieftaincy tussles, while at other times, it could be a direct assault from armed herders,” he stated.

Godwin Edoh, the member representing Agatu State Constituency at the Benue State House of Assembly, confirmed the killings.

He expressed deep concern over the recurring violence in the local government area.

“A husband and wife who are advanced in age were killed inside their house during the attack,” Edoh stated.

Attempts to reach the Council Chairman, Phillip Ebenyakwu, were unsuccessful as of time of this report.

Meanwhile, Catherine Anene, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, said she had yet to receive a report about the incident
