El-Rufai Vs Kaduna Assembly: Court Adjourns Hearing to July 17

El-Rufai Vs Kaduna Assembly

The Federal High Court in Kaduna has postponed the hearing of the case filed by former governor Nasir El-Rufai against the State House of Assembly and the Attorney General of Kaduna State to July 17, 2024.

El-Rufai is contesting the assembly committee’s report, which accuses him of corruption. During the case’s initial hearing on Monday, the counsel for the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Sani Katu, SAN, informed the court of their intention to file a notice of preliminary objection, challenging the court’s jurisdiction over the matter.

Katu and the Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General of Kaduna State, Sule Shaibu, SAN, also a defendant, requested additional time to file their applications related to El-Rufai’s case.

El-Rufai’s counsel, Sule Umoru, did not oppose the extension of time.

After considering the submissions from both sides, the presiding judge, Justice Rilwan M. Aikawa, rescheduled the hearing to July 17, 2024, allowing the respondents time to file their applications, including the substantive application.

El-Rufai had initially filed the case on June 26, 2024, seeking to nullify the probe report by the Kaduna State House of Assembly. He argued that the report violated his constitutional right to a fair hearing, as he was not allowed to defend himself against the corruption allegations during his eight-year tenure.
