The Lagos State Government (LASG) has urged residents to embrace subsistence farming by growing various crops within their homes to mitigate the state’s high cost of food items.

Subsistence agriculture involves farmers growing crops to meet the needs of themselves and their families on small plots of land.

Ms. Abisola Olusanya, the state Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, made this call at a news conference on Wednesday in Lagos.

Olusanya encouraged Lagos residents to adopt subsistence farming to enhance food security.

“We call on Lagos residents to get into some urban farming. Grow something in your home that you can eat; it helps lessen the burden as a society,” the commissioner said.

Regarding distributing food palliatives to residents, she assured transparency in distributing the Federal Government’s rice to states once it arrives. She mentioned that 500,000 beneficiaries had already received palliatives from the state, including rice, garri, and beans.

Olusanya stated that the palliatives were distributed to beneficiaries through the Community Development Areas across the state, and civil society, religious groups, and labour unions monitored them.
