Lagos State denies reintroducing monthly environmental sanitation

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, dispelled rumors circulating online

The Lagos State Government clarified that it has not reintroduced the monthly environmental sanitation exercise and will not be imposing any movement restrictions at the end of July.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, dispelled rumors circulating online.

According to him, contrary to news on the Internet, the state is not reintroducing monthly sanitation.

This was contained in a statement issued by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Kunle Adeshina Wahab on Wednesday.

He encouraged residents to continue their daily activities without fear of movement restrictions.

“There will be no restriction of movements on the last Saturday of July as circulated in some news reports,’’ he assured.

Wahab further clarified that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, during a sanitation sensitisation exercise at Campos playground on Lagos Island, announced a new weekly community-based sensitisation and awareness initiative.

‘’The governor said the state government officials will lead from the front every week by going around to join residents in cleaning their environment in a voluntary manner while preaching the message,’’ Wahab explained.

He emphasized that the governor did not indicate that the monthly exercise and movement restrictions would commence in July or any other month.

‘’At no time did the governor make a pronouncement that the monthly exercise and restriction would start in July or any other month for now,’’ Wahab reiterated.

The commissioner urged residents to adopt a culture of regular environmental cleanliness, rather than waiting for government-declared sanitation days.

“All residents should imbibe the culture of cleaning their surroundings all the time and not wait until the government declares a particular month for the commencement of sanitation or restriction of movement,’ he said.
