Residents of Kagara, the headquarters of Rafi Local Government Area in Niger State, have expressed grave concerns over frequent attacks by unidentified groups.

A resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that these attacks have led to several deaths and injuries among the local population. The assailants, often operating in groups on motorcycles, target individuals indiscriminately, even during daylight hours, and abduct them into the bush without explanation.

One such incident occurred three days ago when a former councillor was reportedly abducted while performing ablution for Ishai prayers. He was later released after being questioned about his livelihood.

SP Wasiu Abiodun, spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed the incidents but clarified that they were attributed to the overzealous actions of a vigilante group known as Yansakai, rather than kidnappers.

“It has been determined that these incidents involve the excesses of the Yansakai vigilante group, not kidnappers. The matter is under investigation, and appropriate measures are being taken,” SP Abiodun stated.

The community remains on edge as authorities work to address the situation and ensure the safety of residents.
