Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka recently shared insights about his Nigerian heritage in an interview with the BBC. The 22-year-old football star emphasized the significance of his Nigerian roots and explained the meaning of his Yoruba name.
Though Saka was born in England, his parents are Nigerian, and he has always embraced his dual nationality. As a product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, Saka has consistently acknowledged and celebrated his Nigerian culture and heritage.
During an BBC Five’s Football Daily Show appearance, Saka was asked about his connection to Nigeria. He spoke warmly about his heritage: “It means a lot to me. I grew up with Nigerian parents but in this country, so both sides mean a lot to me.”
When asked about the meaning of his Yoruba name, Saka proudly translated it, saying, “It means added joy.” He added, “I like my name. If I remember correctly, I think my grandma gave it to me. I must double-check with my parents, but I think I’m right.”
