A total of 58 Nigerian women and children have been rescued from human traffickers in Ghana, bringing the total number of rescued Nigerians in Accra in the last three months to 105.
Chief Callistus Elozieuwa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Board of Trustees in Ghana, disclosed this to Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), during her visit to the trafficked victims in Accra.
A statement by the Commission’s Head of Media and Public Relations, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, on Saturday provided a breakdown of those rescued: Kano (47), Katsina (5), Jigawa (2), and Kaduna (4).
In addition to the newly rescued individuals, 11 more girls were earlier rescued and are currently in the care of NIDO BOT Chairman and the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in Ghana, Ambassador Ifedayo Adeoye. These 11 girls have already been repatriated back to Nigeria.
The statement also mentioned that some of the suspected agents involved in the trafficking have been apprehended and handed over to security agencies and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for profiling and prosecution.
Dabiri-Erewa commended NIDO Ghana, the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, and Ghanaian law enforcement agencies for their cooperation.
The rescued women and children are returning to Nigeria, where they will be properly profiled and counselled by NAPTIP. They will then be reunited with their families and rehabilitated by their respective state governments.
