- Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka described Donald Trump as a “consummate liar” and a “menace” and “danger to the world”
- Soyinka noted that while Nigeria has its liars, none compare to Trump, who understood and manipulated the American psyche
Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka has described former US President Donald Trump as a consummate liar. In an interview with TheNEWS as part of activities to mark his 90th birthday, Soyinka expressed his views on Trump, stating that the US Republican presidential candidate is a menace and a danger to the world.
According to Soyinka, while Nigeria has had its consummate liar, they do not compare to Trump. He explained: “But he did one thing. He studied, and he understood the American psyche. And he knew the right chord to tweak to get them on his side, to get them to believe anything he says. I don’t think the world has ever known such a consummate liar like Donald Trump.”
Soyinka said that a Nigerian figure attempting to emulate Trump has only partially succeeded by understanding and manipulating a small segment of the Nigerian psyche. He emphasized, “But Donald Trump is a menace, a danger to the world. I mean it. It is not just to America. He is a danger to the world.”
Trump, who served one term as US president, is vying for a second term. During his campaign in Butler, Pennsylvania – a key state in the November 5 election – the 78-year-old survived an assassination attempt, although the shooter was killed. His campaign reported that he was doing well and appeared to have suffered no major injury besides a wound on his upper right ear.
