The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has summoned the chairmen of its state chapters regarding the planned nationwide protests against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government. Various groups across the country have resolved to embark on these protests on August 1, 2024, in response to the high cost of goods and services.

Senator Ajibola Bashiru, the APC national secretary, disclosed this after Wednesday’s 153rd meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja.

He stated, “The meeting urged all those planning the protests to have confidence in Mr President’s relentless efforts at repositioning the economy while assuring Nigerians that the challenges will sooner or later come to pass. The NWC further called for an emergency meeting of chairmen of the APC in all the thirty-six federation states for further discussions.”

In addition, some leaders from the North and South of Nigeria have urged President Tinubu to address the nation and the steps to quickly address the country’s high cost of living and insecurity.

“We want to call on Mr. President to address the nation, if possible, to calm frayed nerves, knowing that he has the best of intentions for our dear country,” they said in a statement by their leader, Mr. Ralpheal Okorie.

The statement also called on youths and other Nigerians planning to participate in the protests to reconsider.

“The situation in Nigeria is not peculiar to Nigeria alone; it is global. We are using this medium to advise our teeming youth not to join in the protest because miscreants will naturally hijack protests of this nature,” the Citizens Network for Peace and Development in Nigeria (CNPDN) said.
