- He emphasized the importance of considering the broader context of the protests
The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and socio-political organization, Afenifere, has urged Nigerians to exercise caution regarding the planned nationwide protests.
This was contained in a statement released on Thursday by the National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi.
He emphasized the importance of considering the broader context of the protests.
He said, “Information at the disposal of Afenifere is that the planned protest is to draw the attention of the government to the excruciating situation in the country.”
“As the saying goes, those who feel it, know it. In other words, Nigerians consider protest as a way of registering their displeasure, perhaps disenchantment over what many are going through. It’s in order.”
However, Ajayi urged Nigerians to consider whether protesting is the only or the most effective means of addressing the perceived hardships.
“Engagement is a very potent instrument not only to call attention to the situation on ground, but to decide on what the ways should be,” he said.
Ajayi pointed out that the Federal Government has acknowledged the challenges facing the country and expressed a commitment to engaging with Nigerians to find solutions.
He also recalled the destructive aftermath of the #EndSARS protests in 2020, highlighting the long-term impact, such as the destruction of a modern laboratory in Lagos that has yet to be replaced.
He concluded by calling on the government to engage meaningfully with the public and take concrete steps to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians as quickly as possible.
