The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has revealed that out of over 3.4 million children under the age of five in Kano, 2 million (representing 56.9%) suffer from stunting due to malnutrition. This was disclosed by UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office in Kano, Mr. Rahama Rihood Mohammed, during the launch of the 2024 First Round of Maternal Neonatal Child Health (MNCH) Week at Ungwa Uku Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in Tarauni Local Government Area.
Mohammed highlighted that Kano State, with a projected population of about 17 million, has over 3.4 million children under five years old, with more than half affected by stunting.
Dr. Ashiru Hamza Muhammed, the Team Lead for Alive and Thrive in Kano, noted that his organization, as one of the state’s health development partners, has been assisting the Kano State Government, particularly in the areas of nutrition and micronutrient supplements.
The state Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, emphasized his administration’s significant efforts to improve health services across the state, demonstrating a strong commitment to nutrition promotion programs. He added that the state is committed to providing affordable and accessible healthcare services to all 44 local government areas.
