Nigerian Correctional Service prepares arms for nationwide protests

The directive includes servicing weapons in their armoury to ensure readiness

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) has directed its arms unit to prepare for potential security challenges during upcoming nationwide protests.

The directive includes servicing weapons in their armoury to ensure readiness. This measure aims to prevent incidents similar to those during the #EndSARS protests, when some custodial centers were attacked and inmates released.

Deputy Controllers have been instructed to ensure their arms units are properly serviced and prepared for the August protests.

In Enugu, all staff on leave and training, including nursing mothers, have been recalled. Staff now face 12-hour shifts, a change from the previous three-shift schedule.

“Our work schedule has changed since last week. Work now starts from 6am to 6pm. A directive from our headquarters in Abuja also instructed the arms unit to ensure weapons are in good condition. Even nursing mothers are not spared due to manpower shortages, so they will work from 8am to 6pm,” a source at the Enugu prison reported.
