Gunmen kill four police officers in Imo state attack

The incident occurred along Onitsha Road in Owerri, the state capital

No fewer than four police officers were killed on Monday evening when gunmen attacked their patrol vehicle in Imo State.

The incident occurred along Onitsha Road in Owerri, the state capital. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen also shot dead a Point of Sale (POS) operator during the attack.

The attack took place at the Blossom Hotel police checkpoint, near SaveMore Market Place in Irete. An eyewitness stated, “They also shot dead a female POS operator and some pedestrians who were taken unawares. All the people around ran away for fear of being hit by stray bullets.”

Another witness, who wished to remain anonymous, suggested the attack was carried out by individuals enforcing the Monday sit-at-home order.

Henry Okoye, spokesperson for the Imo State police, said the command had not yet received a briefing on the incident but would provide an update once they were fully informed.

Security has deteriorated in Imo State and other parts of Nigeria’s South-East, with frequent attacks on security agencies, government officials, and facilities.
