- The 10-day demonstration is a protest against the economic hardship in the country.
- The protest had earlier commenced on August 1 in many parts of the country.
President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at 7:00 am.
This is contained in a statement by Ajuri Ngelale, the presidential spokesperson, on Saturday.
“Television, radio, and other electronic media outlets are enjoined to plug into the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) for the broadcast” the statement said.
The broadcast will be repeated on the network services of the NTA and the FRCN at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm on the same day.
The ongoing nationwide protest has taken a divergent turn in different regions, with the northern part experiencing widespread violence, looting, and destruction of properties, both public and private.
In contrast, the southern region has witnessed a relatively peaceful protest.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked President Tinubu to promptly address the nation, amidst the escalating protests, in a statement released on Saturday.
The opposition party’s call for the President’s immediate attention highlights the growing concern over the protests’ impact on national stability and security.
The PDP said the president’s silence has worsened the agitation.
“It is indeed worrisome that President Tinubu could remain silent as Nigerians are on the streets demanding good governance, protection, security, and welfare, which are the primary purposes of government,” the PDP said.
