The Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Anthony Ojukwu, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government to establish a human rights violations investigation panel or a reconciliation commission similar to the Justice Chukwudifu Oputa Panel of 1995. He emphasized the necessity of such a panel due to numerous unresolved human rights violation cases over the years.
“As a human rights advocate, I believe that unresolved human rights violations must be addressed to help our nation move forward,” Ojukwu stated. He stressed that unresolved issues continue to cause pain and tension among families, communities, and groups.
He added, “Since this is a listening government, my advice is to constitute a human rights violations investigation panel or a reconciliation commission to review critical human rights violations since the last Oputa panel. Addressing past injustices is essential for the nation to heal and progress.”
Ojukwu highlighted the government’s responsibility under national and international laws to protect human rights and provide remedies for violations. “The government must take primary responsibility for ensuring human rights protection and addressing violations,” he said.
