Lawmakers earn N600k, not N900k–Reps spokesperson

He said this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja

House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations

Rotimi Akin, spokesperson for the House of Representatives, has clarified that the monthly salary for lawmakers is N600,000, contrary to reports suggesting it is N900,000.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, Akin reaffirmed the House members’ commitment to a 50% salary reduction to alleviate hardship.

Akin addressed discrepancies reported in the media, explaining that the actual monthly salary for members, after deductions for advances like housing, is N600,000.

He noted that the member who disclosed his salary on a television program was an exception, as he assumed office through a court decision months after the onboarding process was completed.

The House resolution passed on July 18, 2024, mandated a 50% salary reduction for six months, but this was not implemented for July due to administrative delays. Akin assured that the necessary instructions have since been issued, and the pledge will be enforced moving forward.

He emphasized that there is no need for an investigation, as the House’s position on the matter has been communicated clearly to journalists seeking clarification. Akin called for patience and assured that the House remains committed to earning the trust and confidence of Nigerians.
