Tobi Amusan, the athlete who carried Nigeria’s hopes for a medal at the ongoing Paris Olympics, has been eliminated from the tournament. The 27-year-old competed in the semi-finals of the women’s 100m hurdles on Friday, running in lane six. Unfortunately, Amusan placed third with a time of 12.55 seconds, which was not fast enough to secure a spot in the finals.
Amusan, the current world champion and world record holder, finished behind Alaysha Johnson of the United States, who clocked 12.39 seconds, and Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, who recorded 12.50 seconds.
This result adds to Nigeria’s disappointing performance at the Paris Olympics. As the games approach their conclusion on Sunday, the country is still waiting for its first medal.
Earlier in the week, former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde criticized Nigeria’s poor showing, attributing it to inadequate sports administration in the country. Onigbinde argued that the problem lies not in technical abilities but in administrative inefficiencies, including issues such as failing to register athletes for their events properly.
He lamented that many sports administrators have lost sight of the core objectives of developmental programs that once brought Nigeria success in international competitions. According to Onigbinde, separating politics from sports is essential for improving the country’s future performance.
