Former Kano State governor Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has expressed concern over the ongoing emirship tussle but has chosen not to publicly involve himself in the matter. During an appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Shekarau attributed the crisis to political interference and expressed hope for a peaceful resolution.
Shekarau explained his decision to stay out of the matter: “I am a very senior member of the emirate council, and apart from that, I governed the state. So, I am a very senior citizen of the state. The day the matter went to court, I decided I would not discuss or interfere, no matter what.”
Despite his decision to refrain from commenting, Shekarau acknowledged that the situation is troubling for him as a native of Kano who desires peace in the state. He emphasized his belief in the importance of the traditional institution and his hope that the issue will be resolved soon.
He further elaborated, “The political angle seemed to have led us into this crisis. I don’t see any disagreement if the politicians had avoided all of this and if the traditional institution had been properly engaged.”
Shekarau highlighted the need for cooperation between political leaders and traditional institutions, citing his experience working with the emir during his tenure as governor. “The traditional institutions are leaders in their own right in society. The governor or any government appointee is a leader. There has to be this synergy of understanding.”
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the emirate and the government to benefit the people of Kano.
