Former Labour Party presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi has urged President Bola Tinubu to deeply reflect on and take immediate action on the demands made by Nigerians who recently protested for 10 days against poor governance and economic hardship.
Obi made this call on Sunday, a day after the grand protest ended, where Nigerians across the country voiced their grievances and presented demands to address the nation’s dire state. These demands included curbing corruption, addressing nepotism, and reducing the extravagant lifestyles of the president and other government officials.
The protests, which started peacefully, took a different turn when foreign flags, including those from Russia, were flown in the country’s northern parts. The demonstrations evolved into calls for President Tinubu’s removal from office, with some protesters chanting “Tinubu Must Go.” The government responded by labelling the protests as a coup attempt, blaming “failed candidates of the 2023 elections” for inciting unrest.
As the protests continued, violence erupted in some areas, leading to the looting and burning of properties, including the homes of representatives and offices of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Curfews were imposed in several states to restore order.
Tragically, over 20 people, including innocent bystanders and children, lost their lives during the protests. Security forces reportedly fired tear gas and live bullets at protesters, and journalists covering the events were also targeted, with several arrested and taken to unknown locations.
Expressing his condolences, Obi stated, “I extend my deepest sympathies to all who have lost their lives, including the security personnel, during these protests. These individuals gave their lives while advocating for better governance in our nation. We all share in your grief as we work together for the betterment of our country.”
He also offered prayers for the swift recovery of those injured during the protests, acknowledging their sacrifices for the nation’s cause. Obi emphasized the importance of addressing the legitimate demands of the suffering people and urged leaders to take decisive action on critical issues such as insecurity, corruption, poverty, and economic hardship.
Obi concluded by expressing his belief in the possibility of a better Nigeria, saying, “May the deceased rest in peace, and may the injured recover fully and swiftly. A new Nigeria remains possible.”
