The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will conclude with a star-studded ceremony on Sunday. The spectacle will be Hollywood-inspired as Paris hands over the Olympic torch to Los Angeles, the 2028 hosts.
Tom Cruise, who has frequently attended Olympic events in Paris, is expected to play a prominent role in the closing ceremony. The “Mission Impossible” star is reportedly set to perform a thrilling stunt sequence that will symbolize the Games transfer from Paris to Los Angeles.
Cruise’s appearance will be one of the highlights of the evening, which will also feature performances from top Californian artists such as Billie Eilish and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who will perform live from Los Angeles.
The closing ceremony, directed by Thomas Jolly, will occur at the Stade de France. Jolly, who also directed the grand opening ceremony on the River Seine, emphasized the event’s significance, stating, “On August 11, the Olympic Games will be over, and the Olympic flame will be extinguished. That moment will remind us just how precious these Olympic Games are.”
Before the closing ceremony, 14 gold medals will be available across various events. The women’s marathon will be the final event of the athletics program, with Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, who has already secured bronze medals in the 5,000m and 10,000m, looking to complete her impressive Olympic run.
In basketball, the dominant US women’s team will aim for their eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal when they face France. A victory would give the US women the record for the most consecutive golds in any team sport at the Olympics, surpassing the US men’s basketball team’s streak from 1936 to 1968.
The US women’s volleyball team will also compete for gold, facing Italy in the final. At the same time, China’s Li Wenwen will aim to become the strongest woman at the Games in the over 81kg weightlifting category.
Other gold medal matches include the men’s water polo final between Serbia and Croatia and the men’s handball final, in which Germany will face Denmark. The track cycling and wrestling events will also conclude with their final competitions.
As the Paris Olympics close, the world will watch as the torch is passed to Los Angeles, marking the end of an unforgettable Olympic Games.
