Three teenagers drown in Jigawa

Three teenage girls have drowned in Jigawa state, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has said.

The teenagers drowned in a pond in Tulla village, Buji local government area of the State.

The spokesman of the NSCDC Jigawa State Command, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, confirmed the incident in a statement.

According to him, the names of the victims are Fatima Sule (12), Nasiya Sale (12) and Huwaila Sa’adu (13).

The girls, the statement explained, met their untimely death while trying to cut grasses to feed their livestock beside the pond.

The statement explained that NSCDC, Buji Local Government Divisional Officer received a distress call from some members of the Tulla community at around 1100hrs on Saturday and rushed to the scene with the division’s disaster management team.

Alongside members of the community, they were able to recover the bodies of the three young girls after about 30 minutes of search and rescue mission.

The statement added, “The bodies were later taken to the nearest Health Center in Tulla village, where they were confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty.”

The remains of the girls, according to the statement, were handed over to their respective parents and buried according to Islamic rites.

The statement noted that the incident has left the community in mourning, and the NSCDC has urged residents to be cautious during the rainy season
