The Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development, led by Director General Dr. Asabe Vilita Bashir, has announced plans to collaborate with UN Women and the Canadian High Commission to create resource centres aimed at empowering women in governance and decision-making across Nigeria.
During a two-day capacity training for Women Affairs Commissioners from all 36 states, Dr. Bashir highlighted that these centres will equip women to take on leadership roles by offering networking opportunities, access to expertise, and best practices. “With these resource centres, we are strategizing to train women and prepare them effectively for the political space,” she said.
Beatrice Eyong, UN Women’s country representative to Nigeria, represented by Deputy Country Rep Zephaniah Aura, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to boosting the professional development of Nigerian women. The centres will also focus on climate-smart agriculture, clean-energy cooking methods, and equipping women with the tools needed for success in politics, particularly in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
UN Women will establish resource centres in Ekiti, Kwara, Kaduna, and Ebonyi this year.
Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, James Christoff, praised the initiative, stating it underscores Nigeria’s commitment to gender equality and empowering women in leadership roles. He emphasized the importance of collaboration in creating a supportive environment for women ahead of the 2027 elections.
