- The joint campaign by Lagos and Ogun states represents a proactive effort to combat open defecation and improve public health.
- It reflects a commitment from both governments to create healthier, cleaner environment.
The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) have launched a public awareness campaign to end unsanitary practice of open defecation along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos state commissioner for environment and water resources, said the initiative is to prevent the spread of cholera and other communicable diseases.
Wahab said the initiative aims to restore the aesthetic appeal of the vital corridor, targeting the median from OPIC plaza to Otedola bridge, while engaging relevant stakeholders in monitoring the area for violations.
Babatunde Ajayi, general manager of LASEPA, said that educating the public about the severe health hazards of open defecation is crucial, especially during the rainy season when the risk of contracting waterborne illnesses like cholera significantly increases.
“We will work with local governments, Environmental Health Officers, market women, and law enforcement agencies to police this environment and report any infractions for legal action,” he said.
Speaking further, Oluwadare Kehinde, general manager of OGEPA, lauded LASEPA’s initiative, emphasising the importance of cross-state cooperation in tackling environmental issues.
“This initiative sets a strong precedent for how we can work together to tackle common issues,” Kehinde said.
Kehinde added that Ogun state is partnering with global entities to build additional public restrooms, aiming to eradicate the practice of open defecation entirely.
