The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to set up magistrate courts across airports nationwide as part of ongoing efforts to curb touting and enforce airport regulations more effectively. The initiative aims to ensure violators receive immediate judgments.
FAAN’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, disclosed this development during a meeting in Abuja on Friday between FAAN management and heads of security agencies at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The meeting was organized to brief stakeholders on recent airport activities, share the strategic goals of the current administration, and discuss ways to enhance passenger experiences.
Mrs. Kuku highlighted the persistent challenges posed by touts and loiterers who disrupt airport operations and inconvenience legitimate airport users. She emphasized the importance of keeping airports free from unauthorized individuals, stating, “There are people who have absolutely no business being at the airport, and they continue to create issues for us. We have an anti-touting taskforce, and we will begin prosecuting those engaging in these illicit activities or loitering around the airport environment and harassing passengers onsite.”
Additionally, Mrs. Kuku noted the misuse of processes by some car hire operators and warned that such behavior would no longer be tolerated.
In her remarks, she also stressed the need to modernize baggage screening procedures at the international wing of the airport. She explained that FAAN plans to introduce a system where luggage is screened using machines, allowing security officials to monitor contents in real-time and only inspect bags that raise concerns.
“We must improve processes at the airport. This is the 21st century, and we must keep up with the times,” she added.
