A prolonged heavy rainfall that began on Thursday night and continued into Friday afternoon has caused the collapse of a key bridge in Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The bridge, which connected the villages of Mayalo, Sambawa, Gumbin-Kure, Uguwar Shuaibu, and Gandiji, gave way on Friday due to the relentless downpour. Residents reported that the bridge was vital for transportation, linking the affected communities and serving as a major route for economic activities, social interactions, and access to essential services.
A resident expressed concern over the disruption caused by the bridge’s collapse, noting that it has severely impacted daily life in the affected villages and surrounding areas.
A local government official confirmed that emergency rescue operations are underway. “They are already evacuating the stranded and displaced residents in the affected communities. They are also evaluating the extent of the damage the bridge collapse has caused,” the official said.
The affected communities have urgently appealed to the government to expedite the repair and reconstruction of the bridge, restoring connectivity and returning normalcy to their economic and social activities.
