9-year-old girl dies after alleged sexual abuse at Kano chemist

According to reports, Rumaisa's father, Malam Sadiq Badamasi, had taken his three children to the facility seeking treatment for their fever

Tragedy struck in Jaba, Fanisau Unogo Local Government Area of Kano State, where a 9-year-old girl, Rumaisa Sadiq, allegedly died after being admitted to a local health facility run by Manir Mai.

According to reports, Rumaisa’s father, Malam Sadiq Badamasi, had taken his three children to the facility seeking treatment for their fever. While two of the children were treated and sent home, Manir Mai allegedly advised that Rumaisa, the eldest, be admitted due to her critical condition, which required urgent medication.

However, instead of receiving medical care, Rumaisa’s condition severely deteriorated. When Malam Badamasi returned to check on his daughter, he was horrified to find her in a critical state. The healthcare provider reportedly attributed her reaction to the injections she received. Rumaisa was dehydrated, groaning in pain, and complaining of stomach and leg cramps. Upon undressing her, her mother discovered severe bleeding.

Unaware of the sinister circumstances, they rushed Rumaisa back to the same chemist, who finally acknowledged the gravity of her condition and advised taking her to a nearby hospital. Tragically, the Primary Health-care Centre in Ungogo local government area also turned her away, leaving the bleeding child without medical attention.

Rumaisa was finally admitted to Murtala Mohammed General Hospital, where doctors made a valiant effort to save her life. Despite their best efforts, tragically, they were unable to reverse the damage, and Rumaisa succumbed to her injuries.

Malam Badamasi received the heartbreaking news from doctors at the hospital that his daughter, Rumaisa, had suffered severe injuries. The alleged perpetrator, Manir Mai, was promptly arrested and charged in connection with her death. The trial judge ordered his remand in a correctional center pending trial.

Kano State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Disabled and Children, Hajia Aisha Saji, confirmed Rumaisa’s tragic death in a statement, assuring that justice would be served. During a condolence visit to the victim’s family, the Commissioner vowed that Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration would pursue the case to its conclusion, despite attempts to divert it, to serve as a deterrent to others.

“There must be justice for the little girl who lost her life simply because someone chose to display his animalistic instinct on her. In fact, full and quick dispensation of justice in this case is necessary in order to serve as a lesson and deterrence to others like this grownup person that carried out this merciless act against an innocent nine-year-old girl.”

“The Kano State Government under the justice-loving Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf will follow up the case in court to a conclusive end,” the statement added.
