- NARD issues 10-day ultimatum to government, threatening strike if Dr. Popoola, abducted in December 2023, is not released by August 26th
- The association warns that industrial harmony cannot be guaranteed if authorities do not prioritize their colleagues’ safe return
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria, Kaduna State, has issued a 10-day ultimatum to the government and security agencies, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of their colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola.
During a press conference held at ABUTH on Friday, Dr. Suleiman Isah Adah, the association’s President, and Dr. Jimoh Aminat, its Secretary, announced that the doctors would initiate an industrial action if their demands were not met by the deadline. “We cannot guarantee industrial harmony if she is not released or rescued by August 26th,” they stated.
Dr. Popoola, a mother of five and a medical practitioner at the National Eye Care Centre in Kaduna, was abducted on December 27, 2023, along with her husband and a visiting nephew, Abdul-Mughniy Folaranmi, when bandits attacked the hospital’s staff quarters. Although her husband was released due to his worsening health after meeting the abductors’ demands, Dr. Popoola remains in captivity.
The association warned that if Dr. Popoola is not rescued within the next 10 days, it will have no choice but to go on strike. It urged the government, security agencies, and relevant authorities to intensify efforts to secure the safe return of their colleague.
