Tragedy as six family members die after eating local delicacy in Kano

In Kano State, one Alhaqatu Abdulkarim and her five have died of suspected food poisoning after eating a local meal.

The incident happened in Karkari village in the Gwarzo Local Government Area of the state last Tuesday.

The victims were reportedly rushed to the Gwarzo General Hospital for abdominal complication treatment where they were said to have died while receiving treatment.

The Ward Head of the community, Yakubu Danazumi, confirmed the tragic incident.

Danazumi said, “The incident that led to the death of the six family members happened on Tuesday”

Speaking with Punch, Danazumi disclosed that the husband of the 35-year-old deceased woman died about seven months ago.

“Two of the children died the same day, two others died the following day, followed by their mother on Thursday, while the last passed away on Friday.

“We have buried the victims according to Islamic rites and we will observe the seven-day prayer for all of them on Tuesday.

“The father died about seven months ago leaving behind his widow and her five children while the late husband’s second wife had six children.

“So, the woman alongside her five children died after consuming the local delicacy,” Danazumi stated.

The deceased were identified as the 35-year-old mother, Alhaqatu Abdulkarim; Usman Abdulkarim (nine years); Fiddausi Abdulkarim (11 years); Hafsa Abdulkarim (seven years); Jamilu Abdulkarim (four years) and Bashari Abdulkarim (19 years).

The spokesman for the Kano State Police Command, Abdullahi Haruna, also confirmed the incident, saying the incident occurred in Gwarzo (about 135 kilometres away from Kano.

According to him, investigations had commenced towards arresting the suspects, who sold the killer local delicacy to the deceased.

“As soon as investigations were concluded, the command will address a press conference to update newsmen,” he said
