Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has mourned Sarkin Gobir, Alhaji Isa Bawa, District Head of Gatawa District in Sabon Birni local Government of Sokoto State, who was reportedly killed by bandits after weeks in captivity.

WITHIN NIGERIA had reported that Bawa and his son were abducted in July while traveling from Sokoto to Sabon Birni.

According to Gobir, one of the monarch’s sons, bandits opened fire on their vehicle, causing it to crash, which allowed them to seize the Emir and his driver, who is also his son.

The bandits later released a video showing the leader pleading for his life and appealing to the government for help, Idris4Peace, an X user, reported.

Tragically, the pleas for help were ignored, and the bandits ultimately executed the Sarkin Gobir.

The news, along with the distressing video, was shared on Wednesday by Idris4Peace on X.

In a message shared on X, Atiku commiserated with the bereaved family, entire community of Gobir Emirate and the government of Sokoto State on the Sarkin Gobir’s killing.

“The heinous act of violence perpetrated by bandits resulting in the untimely demise of such a revered leader is a stark reminder of the pressing need for enhanced security measures in safeguarding the lives and property of citizens.

“The failure of government to show concern or devise effective security strategies has undoubtedly contributed to the escalation of such distressing events in recent times,” Atiku stated.

The 2023 presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stressed that government must provide security that will ensure the protection of lives, such that individuals do not have to live in fear of falling victims to senseless acts of violence.
