BREAKING: Supreme Court upholds Uzodinma’s reelection as Imo governor

The APC candidate polled 540, 308 votes to defeat his closest rivals, PDP’s Anyanwu, who scored 71,503 votes and LP’s Achonu who got 64,081.

The Supreme Court has affirmed the re-election of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, confirming his victory in the polls.

On Friday, August 23, a five-member panel of the court rejected the Labour Party’s appeal, deeming it lacking in merit.

Justice Mohammed Baba Idris, who delivered the lead judgment, ruled against the appellants on all three issues presented.

The judge found that the Labour Party and its candidate, Athan Achonu, failed to provide sufficient evidence to support their claims.

As a result, Justice Idris upheld the Court of Appeal’s decision, which had previously dismissed the Labour Party’s petition.

The Supreme Court is currently delivering its verdict on a separate appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Samuel Anyawu.

According to INEC, the number of registered voters in the state for the poll was 2, 419,922 with 2,318,919 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected but a total number of 701,338 votes were validly recorded at the end of the poll.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Governor Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the November 11, 2023 governorship election in the state.
