The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a stern warning to foreign nationals involved in funding banditry, stating that they will face prosecution for economic sabotage and waging war against the Nigerian state.
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, delivered this warning through a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori, on Thursday in Abuja. This warning follows preliminary reports that some non-Nigerians in the mining sector may be financing such criminal activities.
This action also comes in response to reports of 12 miners allegedly killed by bandits in the Ungwan-Magro community of Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State. Dr. Alake urged foreign embassies in Nigeria to closely monitor the activities of their nationals within the sector, as any involvement in criminal conduct could severely impact diplomatic relations between Nigeria and other nations.
Mining operations in the affected area have been banned as part of the government’s efforts to address the situation. Dr. Alake emphasized that no mining activities will be permitted at the site of the attack until security agencies have completed their investigations.
The minister condemned the killing of the miners and vowed to bring those responsible to justice. He assured that security agencies are actively pursuing the perpetrators and will not rest until mining sites across the country are secured from bandits and other criminal elements attempting to exploit mineral-rich areas through violence.
