JUST-IN: Gundogan announces return to Manchester City

His departure to Barcelona was seen as a significant loss for Pep Guardiola's side

The former German international midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan has announced his return to the “best club in the world”.

Gundogan after re-signing for Manchester City from Barcelona on Friday, issued an open letter to Barcelona fans, explaining his sudden departure from the club.

The former German international won five Premier League titles and the Champions League among 12 major trophies during his first spell at City between 2016 and 2023.

The 33-year-old has sealed a return to Manchester City only one year after he left as a free agent.

Gundogan has now revealed that he was asked to leave because of Barca’s financial issues.

“Now I am leaving in a difficult situation, but if my departure can help the club financially, it makes me a bit less sad.

“Nevertheless, it’s been a time with incredible experiences and ups and downs—I always wanted to play at Barça, and I am very grateful for a memory and experience that I will remember for my life.

“I wish you the best for the season and for the future. The fans deserve to get this big club back to the world’s best,” the letter read in part.
