  • Patricia Igwebuike, the Commissioner for Transportation, revealed this plan during the 9th All Nigeria Airport Business Summit and Expo held in Lagos

The Anambra State Government is exploring the possibility of either establishing a state-owned airline or forming partnerships with existing airlines to cater to the increasing travel demands in the state.

This initiative aims to align with Nigeria’s national transportation policy and enhance connectivity in the region.

Patricia Igwebuike, the Commissioner for Transportation, revealed this plan during the 9th All Nigeria Airport Business Summit and Expo held in Lagos. According to a statement released by the state’s Ministry of Information on Saturday, Igwebuike highlighted the success of the Chinua Achebe International Cargo and Passenger Airport in Umueri, which has seen over 5,700 flights and served more than 343,000 passengers since its inauguration.

“We have observed high demand from people traveling to and from Anambra, and we are in discussions with airlines like Ibom Air,” Igwebuike said. “We are analyzing whether the state should launch its own airline or partner with existing ones because of this demand.”

The commissioner emphasized that the airport was primarily established to support cargo operations, given Anambra’s commercial vibrancy. She noted that the idea of building an airport in Umueri dates back to 1979, when it was first proposed during Governor Jim Nwobodo’s administration.

“There is continuous progress at the airport, and Anambra’s strategic location as a commercial hub in the South-East necessitates such infrastructure. The airport is a reflection of decades-long planning, with former Governor Willie Obiano finally initiating construction after settling compensation for the acquired land.”

The government’s long-term vision for the airport focuses on both passenger and cargo services, given that a significant portion of imports into southern Nigeria eventually reach Anambra. Igwebuike expressed optimism about the future of the airport, positioning it as a vital driver of economic growth in the state.
