- Ajayi emphasizes the importance of local government autonomy for democracy and urges careful consideration of proposed constitutional amendments for leadership effectiveness
Agboola Ajayi, the PDP candidate for the upcoming Ondo State governorship election on November 16, 2024, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reassess certain policies to ease the growing hardship faced by Nigerians. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Ajayi acknowledged the president’s commendable steps, particularly in advancing local government autonomy, but emphasized that some federal policies have exacerbated the suffering of ordinary citizens.
Ajayi noted, “The hardship is overwhelming; everyone is feeling it. People are genuinely hungry. These policies need to be reviewed so that the masses can breathe easier. You need to visit the streets to see how people are suffering. Ondo State is even worse.”
Drawing on his own experience as a local government chairman, Ajayi stressed that local government autonomy is crucial for strengthening and deepening democracy, enabling leaders to implement meaningful projects at the grassroots level.
Regarding the proposed constitutional amendment to introduce a six-year single term for presidents and governors, Ajayi acknowledged the argument that the current presidential system is costly. However, he emphasized that the focus should be on electing visionary leaders capable of delivering results. He urged a careful consideration of the proposal, noting that it has been a topic of debate in Nigeria for some time.
