The Delta State Government has established a 16-member flood management committee to address the recurring issue of flooding in the state.
The committee comprises key Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, alongside other stakeholders typically involved in disaster management.
This initiative comes in response to the release of the 2024 annual flood outlook. According to a statement signed by the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, and released on Sunday, the committee is headed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu. The committee has already identified and prepared upland locations that could serve as camps for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) should the need arise.
The statement highlighted, “Sensitization and stakeholders’ meetings have also been held in collaboration with NEMA and SEMA to prepare for potential incidents. Flood alert jingles are being aired across media outlets statewide.”
Additionally, the government is conducting continuous visits to flood-prone areas, sharing rainfall predictions, and monitoring developments. The statement also noted that relevant agencies are working to clear blocked drains and waterways to ensure proper rainwater flow to coastal areas, where the State Stormwater projects are targeted.
