- Dangote Petroleum Refinery is set to begin production of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), enhancing local supply and reducing imports
- The refinery’s advanced facilities have garnered praise, and petrol production is expected to impact Nigeria’s energy sector and economy significantly
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals is gearing up to begin the production of premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. This announcement was made by Mr. Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Oil & Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, during a visit by various engineering bodies, including the Nigerian Academy of Engineering (NAE), the Association of Consulting Engineering in Nigeria (ACEN), and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
During the tour, the engineers praised the refinery’s state-of-the-art facilities. They commended Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Industries, for his commitment to employing and developing highly-skilled Nigerian engineers. Margaret Oguntala, the first female President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), described the refinery as “mind-blowing,” noting that it surpasses the facilities at the Port Harcourt and Kaduna Refineries.
Prof. Azikwe Peter Onwualu, representing the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, expressed pride in the accomplishments at the Dangote Refinery, urging Aliko Dangote to continue his efforts despite any criticism.
In response to questions about monopoly concerns, Mr. Edwin clarified that Dangote’s ventures in industries such as cement, sugar, and now petrol, have paved the way for other investors, ultimately benefiting Nigeria’s economy. He emphasized that Dangote’s business strategy focuses on minimizing energy costs, maximizing production efficiency, and reinvesting profits into the Nigerian economy.
The refinery’s petrol production is expected to enhance local supply, reduce the need for imports, and save substantial foreign exchange for Nigeria. Engr. Babajide Soyode, Technical Consultant to Dangote Refinery, expressed pride in being part of the project, highlighting Aliko Dangote’s dedication to meeting the needs of the Nigerian people.
As the refinery prepares to roll out petrol, this development is anticipated to significantly impact Nigeria’s energy sector and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
