Salihu Mohammed Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman (North West) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has warned that if opposition parties fail to unseat the APC in the 2027 elections, the country could suffer dire consequences.
In a statement titled “Looming Danger of Docile Political Opposition,” Lukman criticized the opposition parties for their internal crises and lack of structured political engagement as the 2027 elections approach. He expressed concern that opposition parties discussing a potential merger have not yet moved towards any meaningful political strategy within existing opposition platforms.
Lukman highlighted that the opposition’s disarray has emboldened the APC-led government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, allowing what he described as “insensitive and reckless decisions” that have worsened the living conditions of Nigerian citizens.
He also expressed alarm at the internal struggles within major opposition parties, including the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), noting that these issues weaken their ability to challenge the ruling party effectively.
Lukman warned that if the opposition fails to develop a unified and strategic political platform by the end of December 2024, any challenge to the APC in 2027 would likely be driven by personal ambitions rather than a collective vision. He suggested that such a scenario could lead to a government even worse than the current one, regardless of which opposition leader takes the helm.
