- President Bola Tinubu plans to introduce a new whistleblowing policy to enhance transparency and protect whistleblowers in Nigeria
- The policy aims to hold public institutions accountable while encouraging citizens to report misconduct for the public good
President Bola Tinubu is set to present a new whistleblowing policy to the National Assembly for legislative approval, according to Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy. Edun shared this information during a meeting in Abuja on Wednesday titled, “Implementing the Whistle-blowing Policy in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges, and the Way Forward.”
Edun emphasized that the Federal Government is counting on Nigerians to support the policy, which aims to enhance transparency and accountability in governance. He highlighted the importance of protecting whistleblowers who act in the public’s interest.
“The policy includes mechanisms for protection, and it is our responsibility to uphold these provisions and support those who come forward for the public good,” Edun stated.
He further noted, “Individuals who are public-spirited, brave, committed, and determined to do the right thing must and will be protected. A successful whistleblowing policy involves receiving verifiable reports, conducting thorough investigations to authenticate them, and taking appropriate action to enforce compliance with the law.”
Edun also mentioned that the whistleblowing policy is designed to hold public institutions accountable to Nigerians. The policy will empower citizens to act as watchdogs, ensuring government actions are transparent and in line with the law.
