The Ogun State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has suspended its ongoing strike for four weeks to allow peaceful negotiations with the state government.
The decision was made after an emergency general meeting, where members addressed the public hardship caused by the 25-day strike, which disrupted services at state healthcare facilities. The association has instructed its members to resume work at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, September 2, 2024.
The strike aimed to achieve wage parity between Ogun State healthcare institutions and their federal counterparts, and to improve member welfare.
During a press conference, NMA Chairman Dr. Ogunjimi Luqman explained that the meeting, which took place on August 27 and reconvened on August 29, evaluated the strike’s progress and reviewed the association’s negotiations with the Ogun State government.
Dr. Luqman emphasized that the strike was initiated due to the state government’s failure to implement the reviewed CONMESS wage scale, adopted by federal counterparts in June 2023. Despite ongoing efforts, the issue remains unresolved, and the NMA urged the state government to meet its demands during the suspension period to prevent further disputes.
The association plans to reconvene on September 30, 2024, to assess the situation, warning that continued industrial harmony is not guaranteed if their demands are unmet.
