- The minister promised that those found responsible will face consequences
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an urgent investigation into claims of unacceptable conditions at the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar, Cross River State.
This follows the circulation of a distressing video on Facebook, which appears to show inmates enduring severe mistreatment and being served poorly prepared meals.
In a statement released on Sunday, the minister’s media aide, Babatunde Alao, stressed that any lapses in the quality of food, sanitation, and the general welfare of inmates will not be tolerated.
“The Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, is deeply concerned by reports on Facebook suggesting that inmates at Afokang Custodial Centre are being subjected to inhumane conditions, including being served inadequately cooked meals,” the statement read.
The minister has called for a thorough investigation, promising that those found responsible will face consequences.
He emphasized that the treatment of inmates must meet acceptable standards, ensuring their dignity and well-being.
The findings of the investigation will be made public, and appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken, the statement added.
