The Abia State Government has voiced concerns over the rising cases of blindness and eye-related diseases within the state, urging residents to undergo regular eye examinations for early detection and treatment.
Health Commissioner Professor Ogbonnaya Uche expressed these worries during the inauguration of a new Eye Care Centre at the Amachara Specialist Hospital annexe in Umuahia.
He cited a study revealing that over 4 million Nigerians are living with various eye challenges, with more than 1 million already blind.
Professor Uche emphasized that the establishment of the Centre aims to combat preventable blindness among residents, with state-of-the-art equipment positioning it as a referral hub.
He also revealed that the Governor has issued a directive to upgrade the hospital into a world-class facility for eye care and other medical services.
Highlighting the administration’s commitment to health, the Commissioner noted that the hospital would undergo rapid transformation, including its development into a College of Nursing, following the release of funds for the project.
He assured that this initiative would help the state reclaim lost accreditations from the previous administration.
Earlier, Dr. Chimezie Okwuonu, Chief Medical Director of the Abia State Specialist & Diagnostic Hospital, confirmed that the Governor had also approved funds for the hiring of specialists to manage the hospital.
