Suspected bandits have reportedly ordered residents of M.I Wushishi Estate in Minna, Niger State, to vacate their homes or face death.
The attackers, believed to be illegal miners, allegedly stormed the estate while most of the male residents were at work, smashing windows and damaging vehicles.
One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said the attack occurred shortly after locals reported the activities of illegal miners to the police. “These men, whom we suspect are miners, have warned us to leave or be killed. They attacked in broad daylight, breaking windows and damaging several cars,” the resident said.
He added that many residents, including senior civil servants, have begun leaving the estate out of fear. “Nowhere is safe in this state. If it’s not bandits or terrorists driving people from their homes, it’s hoodlums and miners. Where is the government in all of this?” he lamented.
Niger State Police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the incident, stating that peace has since been restored. “A distress call was received on 2nd September 2024 about suspected illegal miners and miscreants attacking homes at M.I Wushishi Estate. Police responded, dispersed the attackers, and recovered the body of an unidentified individual. Investigations are ongoing, and patrols have been intensified to prevent further violence,” Abiodun said.
