Imo: Gunmen set police station ablaze, kill cop, two others

Gunmen terrorising Nigeria’s south east region have assassinated a policeman in Imo state.

The deceased was killed on Tuesday night at NEPA Junction, Umulogho, Obowo Local Government Area of the state.

The gunmen were said to have dragged the police officer out of his room before killing him.

The eyewitness said, “They left after about 45 minutes of their unhindered operation, shooting sporadically to scare residents away.”

According to reports, after killing the cop, the gunmen returned in the morning and razed down the Otoko Divisional police station located along the Owerri-Umuahia road.

There were multiple attacks by the gunmen as they killed two security guards same time at Umuelemai, in Isiala Mbano Local Government, and burned vehicles on the premises.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, said the perpetrators of the crime would be apprehended and made to face the full weight of the law.

He said the command’s tactical team has been deployed to the area to assure residents of the protection of lives and property.
